100th anniversary of the first crossing of the South Atlantic by plane
This piece is themed around the 100th anniversary of the first crossing of the South Atlantic by Airplane.
The image depicts one of three Fairey III biplane seaplanes that aviators Gago Courtinho and Sacadyra Cabral used for the first crossing of the South Atlantic from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro in 1922.
On the left side is inscribed “TRAVESSIA DO ATLÂNTICO SUL” (Translation: Crossing the South Atlantic”).
The issuing country “PORTUGAL” as well as the vintages “1922 – 2022” are written below the plane.
